How do you get a connector through a patient‘s abdominal wall without a major surgery?

In 2006, ODU’s development team faced this challenge – a pluggable connection had to be established between an artificial heart inside the body and the control units including batteries outside of the body.

The solution is only the connector core is passed through a small incision in the patient‘s abdominal wall.

For this purpose, the core had to be built as compactly as possible and the surface had to be made as smooth as possible.

Since the housing with the locking elements is mounted on the core of the connector by the surgeon outside the body during the operation, this process had to be
as simple and intuitive as possible for the operator.
